Concept
TabletPC's kinda suck because they're either underpowered or too heavy. But what if you could offload the hard work to your desktop machine(s) by connecting to them wirelessly and running all your applications on them? That would leave you with a light and powerful pen-based tablet with lots of battery life!
Challenges
- Wifi is laggy/noisy; lost packets would suck
- Bandwidth/latency
NX could solve this
- You'd need to stay tethered to your desktop machine
If you could store all your documents and settings online, you'd be able to roam around, as long as you could connect to a compatible machine (Linux?)
Implementation
The cost of creating one should first be taken into account. I'm thinking it should be, in the worst case, around $300.
It would need the following components:
- graphics chip
- wifi/bluetooth chip
- pretty display
- a pen interface
- a battery with up to 8 hours of juice
- a CPU that's fast enough to run remote display software and a network stack seamlessly
