All of our memory is encoded data. Without our memory, we can't function in the world. It provides our model of reality.

Computation is interpretation and transformation of this memory. It allows us to come to new conclusions about things we've learned and enhance our model of the world.

If one person/company (comperson) owns all the data, while everyone else only owns the computations, then the comperson can alter the world's memory in any way it chooses, and hence many everyone believe what they want them to.
